This image may recalls Gauguin's famous painting Two Tahitian Women (link below), except that it was from 1899 and probably not something this Dutch publisher of an image from just after 1900 was familiar with.
There are perhaps 300 ethnic groups in Indonesia. Women generally wore a kain, or a long piece of cloth printed in batik and wrapped around their waist.  |
