[Original Dutch] Inlandsch Hoofd Preanger [end]
Dutch rule over Indonesia was exercised with great firmness - they are hardly remembered as fondly as the British in India, for example. They ruled in part by co-opting relevant feudal and existing rulers on the Indonesian islands. Without these allegiances, tacit and official, ruling millions of people with relatively few colonial masters would have been impossible.
Priangan was a rich agricultural region in western Java and its rulers one of the key alliances forged by the Dutch. |
