[Original Dutch] Batavia. Uitkijk. [end]
Batavia is the Dutch name for what is now the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta. The Dutch occupied it after skirmishes with the English in the 17th century, and transformed it into the center of their Asian trade with Europe. Since the European population in Jakarata was the largest on the Indonesian island archipelago, there are more colonial postcards available of the former Batavia than of anywhere else.
Like the English, the Dutch built structures they were familiar with or reminded them of home. This fortified tower on a canal would not have been out of place in Holland.
The original handwritten message on the card read: "Jan. 18th 1906. This is a beautiful but awfully hot city. Too bad you did not come here. Charles."
