[Original Dutch] Groet uit Bandoeng. Groote Postweg, Bandoeng. [end]
J.C. Becker, based in Bandung, was one of many hundreds of Dutch photographers, printers, postcard publishers (or all of these combined) working in Indonesia. Bandung was one of the three major towns in Java developed during Dutch rule. It was full of spacious, leafy avenues and a post office which allowed the Dutch to stay in touch with their relatives and friends at home. Post offices were often the grandest and most popular colonial structures, though the mails to and from Europe took months. At the turn of the century, with the explosion in postcard correspondence and more rapid transportation between Europe and the Far East, they became even more important than at any time previously. |
