[Original Dutch] Chineesche Dame te Batavia [end]
Chinese immigrants have settled in Indonesia for almost 5 centuries, arriving to both escape problems in their native provinces and in search of economic opportunity. There are almost 2 million Chinese-origin Indonesians in the country today.
Although Chinese Indonesians are to be found at all levels of society, they have played a large role in the economy. Many Chinese have been particularly successful in business. This has fueled resentment from more indigenous populations and at different points in history has led to riots, massacres and restrictions on their activities. This was especially pronounced in the later 1960s and most recently in 1998.
Ironically, despite the fact that some of the tension between the Chinese and other Indonesians is fueled by the fact that they are not Muslim, it was originally Chinese Muslims who brought Islam to the island archipelago in the 1400s. |
