A monk is a person who practices religious asceticism, ie the conditioning of mind and body in favor of the spirit. The concept is old but can be seen in many religions.
Hemis is a town 40 km southeast
of Leh in Ladakh, popular for the Hemis monastery that was established in 1672 AD by king Senge Nampar Gyalva. Hemis is popular with tourists for the colorful festival held in July.
Jammu and Kashmir is the northern-most state of India, located mostly in the Himalayan Mountains. It shares a border with Himachal Pradesh to the south, Pakistan to the west and People's Republic of China to the north and the east. Jammu and Kashmir has three divisions: Jammu, Vale of Kashmir and Ladakh. Srinagar is its summer capital and Jammu its winter capital. The Vale of Kashmir, also known as Kashmir Valley, is popular for its beautiful mountainous landscape. Jammu attracts many Hindu and Muslim pilgrims every year. Ladakh is also known as 'Little Tibet', is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and Buddhist culture, which was established as early as the 2nd century.
