The Yiga-Choeling monastery belongs to the yellow Sect of Buddhists who worship a 15 feet statue of the 'coming Buddha', Maitreya, built in 1875 by Lama Sherab Gyantso. No visit to
Darjeeling is complete without a visit to Ghoom, which is six kilometers away from the main town. The hillock is dominated by the famous Yiga Choeling Monastery and a 4.5-metre tall image of the Maitreya Buddha. Ghoom is at an altitude of about 2,407 meters, and offers a spectacular view of the Valley.
Darjeeling is a town in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of Darjeeling district, in the Shiwalik Hills on the lower range of the Himalaya.. The name 'Darjeeling' is a combination of the Tibetan words Dorje ('thunderbolt') and ling ('place'), translating as "The land of the thunderbolt".
