The Virupaksha temple is the main center of pilgrimage at Hampi, Karnataka. The Virupaksha temple has three towers, the eastern tower rises to a height of 160 feet and is nine tiered. It dates
back to the first half of the fifteenth century, it was renovated in the sixteenth century by Krishnadevaraya. The presiding deity is Virupaksheshwara or Pampapathi, his consort Pampa, is believed to be the daughter of Bhrama. There is an ornate shrine to Bhuvaneswari. There is a shrine to Vidyaranya, the spiritual founder of Vijayanagar in this temple. The inner prakaram consists of shrines and pillars of 12th century. Krishnadevaraya also built a mandapam in front of the sanctum. Several of Shiva's manifestations and the ten incarnations of Vishnu are portrayed here.
Hampi is a village in northern Karnataka, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in India. Hampi is located within the ruins area of Vijayanagara. It was the former capital of the Vijayanagara empire. Predating the city of Vijayanagara, this village continues to be an important religious center. The village of Hampi contains many other monuments belonging to the old city. It extends into some of the old ceremonial streets of Vijayanagara. Saint Vidyaranya established the seat of Vijayanagara empire in 1336 A.D. Hospet (12 km from Hampi) is the main town for the getaway for Hampi. Hampi has a history from the epical age of Ramayana, ages before the Vijayanagara Empire was born.  |
