Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is the new name of Victoria Terminus, better known by its acronym VT . The name 'Victoria Terminus' was given to this station in honor of the reigning Queen Victoria. In 1996, in response to demands by the Shiv Sena and in keeping with the policy of renaming locations
with Indian names, this station was renamed as 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus' by the state government after Chhatrapati Shivaji, a famed 17th century Maratha king.
It is a historic railway station of the Mumbai suburban railway and for some long-distance trains. It serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways in India. It is a one of the busiest railway stations in India. On July 2, 2004, this station was nominated as a World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO.  |
