Varanasi is located in Uttar Pradesh State of India, on the left crescent-shaped bank of the river Ganges/Ganga. Varanasi is the holiest city of the Hindus, a place of temples and learning, and where people come to cremate their dead. In Varanasi many people use boats to cross the Ganga/Ganges river. Many
boats can be seen with different painted styles.
The name Varanasi is taken from the Varuna River, to the north, and the Assi River, to the south of city, which are both tributaries of the River Ganga. The British name for Varanasi is Benars, and is still widely used in India. Varanasi is also known as Kashi (luminous), because of old time reputation as a center of learning.  |
