The most famous snake boat race is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which began in 1952 on the occasion of the visit of India's first Prime
Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru to Alappuzha, Kerala. It is held on the second saturday of August every year and features the gigantic snake-boats of Kerala. Now the Boat Race has grown into Alappuzha's single most important tourist event with boats being sponsored by different villages.
Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is a town in Alappuzha District of Kerala state of southern India, town with canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons.
