Rishikesh is a holy city for Hindus located in the foothills of the Himalaya in northern India in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Rishikesh is also known as 'land of the Rishi'. It is the gateway
to the Himalayas and located about 25 kilometers away from holy city, Haridwar. The sacred river Ganga flows through Rishikesh. Many temples, ancient as well as new, can be seen along the banks of the river in Rishikesh. This holy city attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year from within India and from other countries.
The town of Rishikesh is commercialised. Over the dry river bed, the area known as Ramjhula has an impressive rope bridge that connects to the Swarg Ashram on the eastern bank of the Ganges. Swarg Ashram is a good place to stay in Rishikesh with its orchards, ashrams and yoga centres. But further upstream is Laksmanjhula. Here the mountains hug the Ganges and another rope bridge connects pedestrians with some temples.
