Thiruvananthapuram is the capital town of Kerala state in South India. It has a history of supporting fine art and culture. Just off the national highway 47 and further two-hour bus ride from
Thiruvananthapuram, Padmanabhampuram, is officially in the Tamil Nadu state. It was the capital of erstwhile Travancore between 1550 and 1750. Therefore it has a far more intimate connection with the history of Kerala than with the state of Tamil Nadu.
Padmanabhapuram Palace is a superb example of traditional Kerala architecture, replete with teak, granite and stone, all combining in a symphony of elegance and simplicity. Reputed as the largest wooden palace in India, the Padmanabhapuram Palace is now administered by the Kerala government's Department of Archaeology, even though it is located in Tamil Nadu state.The area comprising the fort, the palace and its surrounds covered a total of 86 acres. It is mainly famous for the dining hall which could accommodate 2,000 people at one sitting.  |
