Hampi is a village in northern Karnataka, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in India. Hampi is located within the ruins area of Vijayanagara. It was the former capital of the Vijayanagara empire. Predating the city of Vijayanagara, this village continues to be an important religious centre, having the
Virupaksha Temple. The village of Hampi contains many other monuments belonging to the old city. It extends into some of the old ceremonial streets of Vijayanagara. Saint Vidyaranya established the seat of Vijayanagara empire in 1336 A.D. Hospet (12 km from Hampi) is the main town for the getaway for Hampi. Hampi has a history from the epical age of Ramayana, ages before the Vijayanagara Empire was born. Hampi has an epical history as the capital city of Kishkindha, the monkey kingdom during the period of Ramayana and an emperical history as the capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire. Kishkindha was ruled by the monkey kings, Vali and Sugriva. Anjanadri hillock has legend attached to it. There are multiple versions of Ramayana,Valmiki, Tulsi, Skanda, according to Skanda Ramayana, Anegundi is the birthplace of God Hanuman (Monkey God). Climbing on Anjanadri, there are many monkeys all over the place. There is a God Hanuman temple at the top of the hillock. There?s a steep climb of 700 or so steps up a long, winding, whitewashed path.
