Hampi is a village in northern Karnataka, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in India. Hampi is located within the ruins area of Vijayanagara. It was the former capital of the Vijayanagara empire. Predating the city of Vijayanagara, this village continues to be an important religious centre, with the
Virupaksha Temple. The village of Hampi contains many other monuments belonging to the old city. It extends into some of the old ceremonial streets of Vijayanagara.
Saint Vidyaranya established the seat of Vijayanagara empire in 1336 A.D. Hospet (12 km from Hampi) is the main town for the getaway for Hampi. Hampi has a history from the epical age of Ramayana, ages before the Vijayanagara Empire was born.  |
