Enchey Monastery is a 200 year old monastery, located about 3km northeast of Gangtok. Sikkim state, India. It is advisable to visit Enchey Monastery during December when the Lamas perform the annual religious masked dances.
This monastery was built on the place blessed by the great tantric master Lame
Druptab Karpn, known for his flying powers. He is supposed to have built a small hermitage at the spot he reached after he flew from Maenam Hill in South Sikkim. Later during the reign of Sikyong Tulku (1909-1910), the present monastery was built in the shape of a Chinese Pagoda. The monastery, owes its present form to over 200 years of devoted work by its Nyingma sect of Buddhist monks. This monastery has images of Gods, Goddesses and other religious objects on its premises.
Gangtok is the capital and largest town of the Indian state of Sikkim. It is situated in the lower Himalayas and known for its clean surroundings and temperate climate. In 1975 the monarchy was abrogated and Sikkim became India's twenty-second state, with Gangtok remaining as its capital. Gangtok is a centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning with numerous monasteries and religious educational institutions.
