in Madurai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the third largest city in the Tamil Nadu state. Madurai has a cultural heritage that goes back 2500 years and has functioned as an important commercial center even as early as 550 AD.
Madurai was the capital city of the Pandya kings of South India. Now the city of Madurai is the administrative capital of Madurai district. Tamil Nadu is a state at the southern part of India. Tamil Nadu is bordered by Puducherry, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Sri Lanka, which has a significant Tamil minority, lies off the southeast coast.
