The Dakshineswar Temple is one of the important pilgrimage centers of India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, and was built in 1847 A.D., by Rani Rasmoni, on the bank of Ganga (Hughly) River. Legend
has it that the Goddess appeared in the dream of a rich lady who wanted to go to Varanasi for a pilgrimage. The goddess asked her instead to build a temple on the banks of the Ganga River where she herself would reside in the idol. Thus the temple dedicated to the Goddess stands in the middle while 12 other temples dedicated to lord Shiva and Radha Krishna were constructed. A temple dedicated to Rani Rasmoni has later been added near the entrance.
Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located in eastern India on the east bank of the River Hughly. It is the fourth largest city in India. The city served as the capital of India during the British Raj till 1911, after which the British moved the capital to New Delhi.
