Chinese fishing nets have become a very famous tourist attraction in Cochin. |
 |
The Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) in Cochin, the Indian State of Kerala, are fixed land installations for an unusual form of fishing - shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out
horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each net is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and big stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. They are operated by a team of upto six fishermen. Each installation has a limited operating depth. Consequently, an individual net cannot be operated in tidal waters. Different installations will be operated depending on the state of the tide. The Chinese fishing nets have become a very famous tourist attraction, their size and elegant construction is very photogenic and the slow rhythm of operation is quite hypnotic.
Cochin is located on the coast of the Arabian Sea at the Ernakulam district, Kerala state, India with Kottayam and Alleppey districts on the south, Idukki on the east and Trichur on the north. Cochin, the commercial capital and the most cosmopolitan city of Kerala is also known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. Cochin has one of the finest natural harbors in the world, and was once a major center of commerce and trade with the British, Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch etc. |
