The Banana tree (Musa sapientum) and its near relative the Plantain (Musa paradisiaca) cover a significant part of south India. The Banana tree is a giant herb. The Banana tree grows to a height of 10-20 feet and consists of a false trunk with sheaths of long leaves that spread out from the top of the tree. The fruit grows in a large bunch of 50-150 elongated green fruit, which turn yellow when ripe. The fruit has approximately 75% water and 25% dry matter content. Bananas are a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, and potassium.
Hampi is a village in northern Karnataka, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in India. Hampi is located within the ruins area of Vijayanagara. It was the former capital of the Vijayanagara empire. Predating the city of Vijayanagara, this village continues to be an important religious center. The village of Hampi contains many other monuments belonging to the old city. It extends into some of the old ceremonial streets of Vijayanagara. Saint Vidyaranya established the seat of Vijayanagara empire in 1336 A.D. Hospet (12 km from Hampi) is the main town for the getaway for Hampi. Hampi has an epical history as the capital city of Kishkindha, the monkey kingdom during the period of Ramayana.
