Kochi (Cochin) was the popular centre of Indian spice trade for many centuries, and was known to the Greeks, Romans, Jews, Arabs, and Chinese since ancient times. It has a great past with its
excellent old buildings. Kochi also hosted the grave of Vasco da Gama, the first European explorer to set sail for India, who was buried at St. Francis Church until his remains were returned to Portugal in 1539 A.D.
Cochin is located on the coast of the Arabian Sea at the Ernakulam district, Kerala state, India with Kottayam and Alleppey districts on the south, Idukki on the east and Trichur on the north. Cochin, the commercial capital and the most cosmopolitan city of Kerala is also known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. Cochin has one of the finest natural harbors in the world.
