Garuda is also called Kashyapi, Chirada, Vishnuratha, Gaganeshvara, Nagantaka, Kamayusha and Suparna. The sacred texts of the Vedas that mention Syena (eagle in Sanskrit) are believed to be the earliest reference to Garuda. Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu, has a white face, an eagle's beak, red wings and a man's body. Garuda has an important status in the Hindu religion as a Purana and an independent Upanishad, the Garuda Purana and the Garudopanishad respectively, are devoted to him. |
