The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of Arjumand Bano Begum, his beloved wife, who is popularly called Mumtaz Mahal. Designed by Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, Taj Mahal shows a blend of Islamic, Indian, Turkish and Persian architectural patterns.
The construction of Taj Mahal began in 1631 AD and was completed after 22 years in 1653 AD. The material to build this huge mausoleum was brought from central Asia and different parts of India. However, the white marble, which was the chief building material, was brought from the quarries of Makrana in Nagaur, Rajasthan.
The Taj stands on a raised, square platform (55 meters times 55 meters) with its four truncated corners forming an octagon of unequal shape. The architectural design of this mausoleum uses the concept of symmetry and self-replicating geometry. The Taj also depicts an interlocking arabesque concept where each element stands out distinctly while perfectly integrating into the main structure at the same time.
The central dome of Taj Mahal, 58 feet in diameter, is 213 feet in height. Four subsidiary domed chambers flank it. There are four slender minarets on the corners that measure 162.5 feet. The complete mausoleum is adorned with calligraphy and inlaid design of flowers that use precious gems like jasper and agate. The main archways of the Taj have inscriptions from the Holy Qur'an. The central domed chamber of this mausoleum and four adjoining chambers showcase Islamic decoration. Today, there is no image more symbolic of India than this 17th century masterpiece. |
