[Original caption] Sita, when captured by Ravan, the king of Lanka, was carried and kept in a forest named "Ashok-van" by him, and he ordered demons to watch her. This picture represents that Sita sat thinking under a tree. [end]
When Rama had to leave Ayodhya to honor the words of his father, Sita also followed him to the forest of Dandakaranya. It was from here that the King of Lanka, Ravana, abducted her and took her to Lanka. Rama waged an arduous and long battle to defeat Ravana and set Sita free. After 14 years, Sita returned to Ayodhya with Rama where she had to undergo "Agni-Pariksha" proving her chastity. However, her happiness was short lived as some people of Ayodhya could not accept her captivity in Ravana's kingdom. So, she was once again sent in exile, despite the fact that she was pregnant. She gave birth to twins, Lava and Kusha, who grew up to be valiant princes. Finally, Rama was united with his sons. However, Sita sought refuge with the Earth Goddess. The earth parted and took Sita to a different world. |
