Iltutmish was the third ruler of the Ghulam (Slave) Dynasty (1206 - 1290). He succeeded Qutub-ud-din-Aybak, the founder of Ghulam Dynasty, in 1211. Iltutmish protected his kingdom against the Mongol invasion (1221 CE) and built an efficient administrative machinery for his empire. Before his death in 1236 CE, Shamsuddin Altamash expressed his desire to see daughter Razia as his successor. Razia did succeed briefly to the throne (1236 - 1240) but her liaison with Jalal-ud-din, an Assyrian slave, led to her downfall.
The Tomb of Shamsuddin Altamash is a beautiful structure that showcases exquisite carvings. This tomb is preserved with great care.
