Prince Azem (Azam) Shah (1653-1707), son of Aurangzeb, laid an unsuccessful claim to the throne after his father's death in 1707. He was killed in the ensuing succession struggles and ruled for only a few months.
He was succeeded by Shah Alam I (1643-1712) who managed to rule the Empire for five years. The Mughal Emperors ruled India through strong alliances with groups like the Rajputs, a caste from western India known for their fighting traditions. |
