Traditional stone rice grinder.
This is a traditional stone grinder used to grind rice batter to make idlis or dosas, South Indian snacks. The idli is made by steaming batter ó traditionally made from pulses (specifically black lentils) and rice ó into patties, usually two to three inches in diameter, using a mold. Dosas are crisply fried pancakes, sometimes served with a filling of vegetables.
Most often eaten at breakfast or as a snack, idli & dosas are usually served in pairs with chutney, sambar, or other accompaniments.
The idli is a most common and tasty fastfood available everywhere in India, especially in the states that make up South India, the idli's native region: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Sri Lankan Tamils also have a traditional preference towards idli.
