Parsis in India originally came from Iran (Persia)

 |
A Parsi is a member of a close-knit Zoroastrian community based primarily in India as well as Pakistan. Parsis are descended from Persian Zoroastrians who emigrated to the Indian subcontinent over 1,000 years ago to escape religious persecution.
Parsi ladies were among the earliest Indian women who led an active public life. Prominent Parsi women included Pirojbai Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy (who worked for charitable institutions), Hirabai Cowasji Jahangir (community service) and Meherbai Tata (a champion of women's issues). The Tata family, for example, are India's leading industrial family and representative of contribution this comparatively small community has made to India's economy and culture.
This view of a reclining Parsi lady was one of the most popular postcard images at the turn of the century. |
