[Original caption] The Royal Botanical Gardens on the west bank of the river, were founded in 1780 on the suggestion of Colonel Kyd, and have been of more service to public and private gardens of the world than any other horticultural institute. Besides possessing the rarest of plants it is celebrated for its Palm Avenue and the great Banyan Tree, which covers ground nearly 1,000 feet in circumference. [end]
The Botanical Gardens contain 12,000 specimens of perennial plants besides some rare plants, spread on a land of more than 109 hectares. A vast collection of bamboos, orchids, palms and plants belonging to the screw pine genus (Pandanus) can also be seen here. This garden is best-known for the Great Banyan tree, whose circumference is over 330 meters. The Botanical Gardens also has a library of botanical literature. |
