|
 |
Historical records of Madras (Chennai at present) mention Nungambakkam as one of three villages (in addition to Egmore and Chetput) that the British East India Company purchased in 1743. Since that time, Nungambakkam has remained a part of the city of Chennai. During the 1850s, several colleges and public buildings were built at this place. In the 20th century, Nungumbaukum housed many European civil servants and city administrators.
Nungumbaukum is regarded as a commercial hub of Chennai. Several commercial enterprises, banks, markets and hotels have chosen this place as their base of operation. Nungambakkamn is also known for its cultural roots. The famous Lalit Kala Academy is a prominent institution popularizing the art and culture of the country. |
