The South Asian subcontinent was ruled by the Mughals for a long period, from the beginning of the 16th to the middle of the 19th century. The Mughal Empire attained its heights during the reign of Akbar in the 17th century and began its decline when Aurangzeb died in 1707. The last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, who was deposed in 1858, died in exile four years later in Burma. |
