Chennai is the cultural hub of South India. It is a place that encourages Tamil culture, art and crafts through several universities and performing art centers of the city. The women of this city, often called Madrasee ladies, play an important role in sustaining their tradition and embracing a wider cosmopolitan culture. In fact, traditional Carnatic music and the discipline of Bharatanatyam have hundreds of artists. A significant number are women.  |
