After their surrender to Indian troops in Kanpur, British soldiers and families were to board ships here on the banks of the Ganges that would take them to Kolkata. As it turned out, a battle erupted again here, and many were killed while a few made it safely down the Ganges to other places. The brevity of the title on the postcard indicates its haunting memory in British colonial consciousness.
