The Quwwat Ul Islam Mosque located in the Kutab complex is a magnificent structure
The Kutab Minar is the most famous monument of the Kutab complex. Another popular structure in the complex is the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. Qutab-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim conqueror of the region, started the construction of this mosque in 1193. It was completed in 1197. Additions were made to this structure in 1230 and 1315 by Iltutmush and Alla-ud-din Khilji respectively.
The inner courtyard of this mosque has an exquisite collonade whose pillars are made of richly adorned shafts. Most of these shafts were plundered from 27 Hindu temples and brought here to build the mosque. The floral motifs, indigenous corbeled arches and geometric patterns of this mosque showcase Islamic architectural elements.
