The farms of Kolkata were largely used to grow indigo and jute
|
 |
During the British Raj and even previously, large farm areas were used for neel (indigo), the famous blue dye that may have given India its name thousands of years ago. Jute and tea were other popular crops in Bengal. Landless agricultural workers who toiled in these farms often had to work under difficult conditions with the largest portion of income collected by landowners in urban areas. |
