A massive and majestic piece of architectural grandeur, Trinity Church in Bangalore, South India was completed in 1852. Its huge tower and spire can still be seen from a long distance marking the end of Mahatma Gandhi Road.
St. Mark's Cathedral, built in 1809, had been the only government church in Bangalore City which catered to the spiritual needs of the English speaking population, but it was not large enough to accommodate the congregation. Although the British East India Company had a policy of "one station, one church," public demand required that they make an exception and approve the construction of a second church in 1845.
The church was built to cater to the needs of the British Regiment stationed in Bangalore. Under the British Raj, Bangalore developed as a center for colonial rule in South India. The establishment of the Bangalore Cantonment brought in large numbers of migrant Tamil, Telugu and North Indian workers for developing and maintaining the infrastructure of the cantonment. Government allowances had helped them to finish the building but contributions were made by the members of the church to pay for the furniture and fittings, the rare stained-glass depiction of the baptism of Jesus, and the London-built pulpit and the magnificent pipe organ. Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of England, lived in the parish, and it is believed that he attended the church.
Today, houses of worship catering to variety of faiths can be found in Bangalore including a Sikh Gurudwara, Jain Bastadis, a Parsi fire temple, St Xavier's Catholic Church, St Patrick's Irish Catholic church, in addition to many mosques and Hindu temples.
Bangalore is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka, and is located on the Mysore Plateau in southwestern Karnataka. After India gained independence in 1947, its metropolitan population has grown to 6.1 million (2006), making Bangalore India's third-largest city.
