The Home Rule League in Madras owes its 1916 origin to Annie Besant
|
 |
The early 20th-century Home Rule League demanded self-government for the whole of India from British rule. Many Indian leaders supported this movement including the famous nationalist, Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The Home Rule League created political awareness and ensured the beginnings of an active political movement that inspired future leaders even as it was quickly superseded by other efforts. Annie Besant, who was one of its founders, was a Theosophical Society member who made her home in Chennai. B.P Wadia and G.S. Arundale were two other leaders, and this card shows how quickly political issues became woven into postcards; this card was published by the Home Rule League. |
