Harrison Road in Kolkata is now known as Mahatma Gandhi Road
In 1911, the Calcutta Improvement Trust took the decision to construct a street named Central Avenue. By 1926, the southern part of this street from Mahatma Gandhi Road to Bowbazar and the northern part from Mahatma Gandhi Road to Beadon Street were complete. The M.G Road was the first street of Kolkata that was electrically lit between 1889 and 1892. Dr. Jagadish Chandra Bose was the municipal consultant for this street-lighting project. The dynamos installed at Halliday Street pumping station were used for lighting M.G Road by Kilbum and Company. The M.G Road was also important in the past as it connected major railway terminals at Sealdah and Howrah.
