Though Akbar started building his tomb at Sikandra, it was completed by Jahangir, his son, in 1605
A huge arched entrance bearing Persian calligraphic decoration, jali work and exquisite pattern leads to the Charbagh Garden. The tomb of Akbar is located in the middle part of this garden having a four-quartered layout.
Akbar's Tomb consists of five levels. A podium of arches form the first level. There are no arches in the following three levels made of red sandstone. Several pillars offer support to the flat roof. The uppermost terrace has a white colored wall that has arches and an open to air replica of the sarcophagus. The basement of this building has the tomb of Akbar. A portico leads to this tomb. This portico is decorated with stucco paintings and Persian styled inscriptions.
