The Diwan-i-Am dates back to the 1630s when Emperor Shah Jahan used it as the Hall of Public Audience

The Dewan-i-am was actually built by Shah Jahan and not Aurangzeb as the original caption claims. The commoners were allowed an audience with the emperor at Diwan-i-Am where they told their plights and submitted their petitions. The arches of Diwan-i-Am have a polished cover of white lime and are a treat to the eyes. The royal canopy of Diwan-i-Am is also famous for its triple arches and pietra dura decoration. It was here that the famous Peacock Throne that Shah Jahan ordered was kept. The walls of Diwan-i-Am had marble panels where precious stones were embedded. During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, these stones were removed.
