Held in December, 1911, the Coronation Durbar was a mass assembly where Queen Mary and King George V were proclaimed as the Empress and Emperor of India. After the coronation ceremony, the couple appeared at the balcony window of Red Fort to wave to the masses, about half a million in number, who had come to offer the royal couple their greetings.
During the Coronation Durbar, 26,800 Delhi Durbar Silver Medals were also awarded. Most of these medals were given to the officers serving the British regiments. However, a small number of medals struck in gold were given to the rulers of Indian princely states and government officers belonging to the highest rank.
Today the Coronation Park lies in a neglected state and is occasionally used for municipal conventions and large religious festivals. |
