The catamarans were primarily developed for sport and leisure
A catamaran is a twin-hulled boat. A transverse frame on which a mast is mounted usually joins the hulls. The earliest users of catamaran were the fishermen living on the southern coast of Tamil Nadu. In fact, even the Chola Dynasty used catamarans in the 5th century CE to transfer their fleets for invading the nearby regions that presently form parts of Malaysia, Indonesia and Burma. The West didn't know about the catamaran until William Dampier, an English adventurer, mentioned it in the 1690s. In 1877, an American named Nathanael Herreshoff designed and built the first American catamaran boats.
