Before the invention of pottery jars, cured animal hides were used by water carriers
In India, the bhistees who were better known as water carriers, used bags made of goatskin and pigskin for carrying water. However, these bags needed frequent refilling as they had a limited capacity. After the earthen pots came into existence, it were usually the women in the rural areas who traveled long distances to bring water in their vessels.
Water bottles used today can be considered a modern adaptation of the bhistees practice. |
