Bullocks and bishtis served an important role in transporting fresh water for the residents of the city in the past
In the earlier times, ensuring fresh water supply to the residents of the desert region was difficult. As taps and wells were few in number, local people were largely dependent upon water carriers who were called bishtis. Even animals like bullocks were used to carry either bags of animal hides filled with water or pull carts stacked with water jars. Today while most of the populace enjoys steady supply of water, it is not uncommon to find some bishtis still bringing water to the doorsteps of especially the poor and infirm slum dwellers.
