The Howrah Bridge, originally called the New Howrah Bridge, was constructed between 1936 and 1942. It replaced the Floating Pontoon Bridge that connected Howrah and Kolkata (then Calcutta). The Howrah Bridge was opened to public in February 1943.
The US-based Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company Limited received the contract to build the Howrah Bridge. Construction utilized 26,500 tons of steel. Out of this total some 23,500 tons were supplied by Tata Iron and Steel Company. This cantilever bridge was built at a cost of Rs. 250 lakhs or 25 million rupees, an enormous sum in those days. |
