The Alauddin Gate of Delhi is better known as Alai Darwaza

In 1311, the southern gateway of Quwaat-ul-Islam mosque was extended by Ala-ud-din Khilji. Spread on 17.2 square meters of land, Alauddin Gate is made of red sandstone and has arched openings on each of its sides. The northern arch of this gate is semi-circular where as the shape of the other three resemble pointed horseshoes. This gate has an octagonal base and a wide dome at the top. Alauddin Gate has beautiful geometric symbols, inscriptions in the Naqsh script (a script, mainly used by Arabic and Urdu languages) and calligraphic embellishments on white marble. |
