This funicular railway carries residents and tourists to the upper part of the island
The history of the Peak Tramway dates back to 1881 when the owner of a hotel situated on the Peak, asked to build a funicular railway. A funicular railway on a mountain is pulled by a moving cable and has counterbalancing cars, which ascend and descend. It took three years to construct this revolutionary railway. Sir George William des Voeux, the Governor, inaugurated the Peak Tramway on May 28, 1888 for public service.
