The Marble Boat located at the foot of Longevity Hill
The Summer Palace's Marble Boat was originally built in the 18th century. It was designed to resemble the sailing boats in the South China Sea. The boat is fastened to the banks of a lake, a permanence meant to represent the solidity of Imperial rule. The boat was burned down in 1860 during a European invasion and was later re-constructed in a more Western style. It remains a popular tourist site.
