A Chinese farmer cultivates a flooded rice paddy.

Large amounts of water are required for irrigating rice paddies. Thus, most rice is grown in areas along rivers and marshes where a system of flood irrigation helps grow the rice crops while detering weed growth. In China rice is predominately grown in the south where rain is plentiful. In many villages, rice is still cultivated primarily by hand without the use of machinery. |
