[Original caption] Marauding Chunchuses. These people are a race of bandits and like their brethren the priates of the sea, are a constant terror to the country they infest. They make their living by robbery and are here depicted after lotting a solitary hamlet. Their recklessness and daring in destroying bridges, roads and railways made them useful auxiliaries during the Russo-Japanese war although this was somewhat discounted by their unpleasant custom of robbing the dead.
